Classic Reads Blog Hop

I have to admit, this is a pretty easy topic for me. The first book that comes to my mind is actually my favorite - "The Island of Doctor Moreau" by HG Wells. I've literally read this book over 100 times. I take a paperback copy of it with me when I travel. In fact, I just recently replaced my old, worn out 1966 copy with a spiffy new one - retiring my old friend to a place of honor on the bookshelf in my writing office. No matter my mood, I always love this story.

Written in 1896, it's the story of Edward Prendick, a shipwrecked man rescued by a passing boat who is left on the island home of Doctor Moreau, who tries to create men out of animals.

It's a fascinating tale, dealing with pain and cruelty, moral responsibility, human identity, and human interference with nature.

At first, Prendick is grateful to be rescued - who wouldn't be? But after he learns the purpose of the island, his world is turned upside down. There's Moreau, who sees more of the beast men as little more than failed experiments, and then there's the doctor's assistant, Montgomery, who has grown fond of some of the creatures.

There've been several film adaptations, but my favorite was the 1996 one with Val Kilmer and David Thewlis. The two of them absolutely captured what I'd envisioned Montgomery and Prendick to be.

For my prize today, I'm giving away a paperback copy of "The Island of Doctor Moreau" *plus* a DVD copy of the 1996 movie!

Here's how to enter to win:

GOOD LUCK!!
